A culture for every meal: Cultures for Health is here to help you start your rewarding journey into a natural, gut-healthy lifestyle. Whether you're a DIY-er looking for a new hobby, a burgeoning chef, or just want a healthier gut, we have just what you need! From sourdough to kombucha to yogurt and beyond, we believe everyone's life can be improved by adding more homemade probiotics from cultured and fermented foods to their diet.
Cultures for Health was founded upon the pursuit of sustainable living and a deeper understanding of traditionally prepared, extremely nourishing foods. Today, the Cultures for Health team includes bakers, brewers, cheesemakers, and more—a group passionate about the benefits of culturing and fermentation. We love homemade cultured and fermented foods and beverages for their healthy goodness, delicious taste, and rewarding DIY experience. There’s nothing quite like fresh-baked sourdough or bubbly kombucha made entirely from scratch.
Start fresh, with a fresh starter! Our San Francisco Sourdough Starter is live and ready to go so you can "get doughing" right away with our fresh starter. We recommend feeding at least twice before using to bake, but that's only 14-20 hours of fermentation, so you could easily be making your own artisan bread within a day of receiving starter. For best results, open and feed within 24-48 hours of receipt.
Sourdough starters are created from wild yeast growing in mixtures of flour and water. The foggy environment in San Francisco fosters a particularly pleasant strain, which is why the city's sourdough has been acclaimed since the Gold Rush. By capturing that strain, we're able to let you replicate that famously tangy flavor, firm crust, and soft yet chewy consistency at home. San Fran aside, sourdough stays fresh longer than regular bread and provides more health benefits.
Sourdough is lower in carbs and gluten than regular bread, lasts longer, and has more nutrients. Keeping a sourdough starter in the house is like caring for a plant…that grows delicious bread. You're not limited to simply sourdough bread—you can make pizza dough, bagels, pie crust, and more! Sourdough starters are full of probiotics, which help process the flour and make it easier to digest. Plus, a finished sourdough bread loaf contains prebiotics, which feed the bacteria in our stomachs and promote better gut health.
